Neal grew up in San Antonio, Texas where he spent a lot of his after school and Saturday time at his father's automotive repair shop. He dropped out of Keystone School and after living in Atlanta Georgia and pumping gas at night, settled down for a while, traveling the United States teaching automotive air conditioning repair. He then secured a position with a large auto air conditioning manufacturer as a district sales manager. He lived in Bolder, Co for a time and also spent some time living in Los Angeles.
Feeling the need for formal education, in 1975 he enrolled in TCU full time as an English major with a History minor. As a student he worked 4 to midnight as a heavy truck mechanic, to pay living expenses and tuition. In 1979 an opportunity came to start a manufacturing company and Neal became the first employee of SCS which grew into SCS/Frigette. His responsibilities at SCS/Frigette gave him an opportunity to travel extensively and to experience a variety of world cultures.
